The Umayyad Mosque The Umayyad Mosque is considered one of the most famous and important Islamic landmarks in the world, built during the reign of the Umayyad Caliph Al-Walid bin Abdul-Malik in 705 AD. The mosque has three distinct minarets that loom over the Damascus skyline:
Minaret of the Bride: The oldest one.
Minaret of Jesus: Named so due to the popular belief that Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) will descend there at the end of times.
Minaret of Qaitbay: Built during the Mamluk era.
The Dome of the Eagle: The massive dome in the center of the prayer hall, considered an engineering miracle of its time, giving worshippers a sense of awe and serenity through its height and design. It is distinguished by its stunning architecture and beautiful mosaics, and it houses the shrine of Prophet John the Baptist (Yahya, peace be upon him), making it a significant religious and tourist destination.
